HORACIO LAVANDERA in Concert
The Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist has the privilege to announce that piano legend HORACIO LAVANDERA is returning to our city to offer an exclusive piano concert on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 7:30 pm.
As the youngest competitor, he won the highest prize at the International Piano Competition Umberto Micheli at the age of sixteen, at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan (Italy), playing a diverse repertoire, including pieces from baroque to contemporary music. He was also awarded a Special Prize by the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, for his interpretation of Ravels Concerto in G Major in the final round. From that moment on, Lavandera has been invited to perform in some of the most important venues around the world in cities like New York, Munich, Paris, London, Boston, Rome, Vienna, Hamburg, Tokyo, Madrid, Buenos Aires, and many others. Besides the Filarmonica della Scala, his presence has been requested by numerous prestigious orchestras, such as Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, Orquesta Sinfónica de Radio Televisión Española, London Chamber Players, Orquesta Estable del Teatro Real, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Youth Orchestra of the Americas, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires.
In addition to covering the classical repertoire, he seeks to spread and promote contemporary music, sometimes doing world-class premieres, having collaborated with musicians like Karlheinz Stockhausen (who recommended Lavandera as a performer of his music), Pierre Boulez, Mauricio Kagel, Richard Dubugnon, Guillaume Connesson, Atsuhiko Gondai and many others.
A Steinway artist, Lavandera's program in the US will include Beethoven (to whom he was devoted during a period of formation with Maurizio Pollini in Italy), Mozart, Mendelssohn, Gershwin, Schubert and Dino Saluzzi. Ted Gioia, music critic of the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, rated his album Imagenes as one of the best 20 albums of the year. Saluzzi, probably the most prominent living composer in Argentina, embodies a unique style, combining classical and contemporary musical styles with folklore, tango and jazz. Lavandera has recorded albums for Sony Music, ECM Recordings, EPSA and NIBIUS, among others.
In 2014, he was featured in the movie Zonda, Folklore Argentino, by Oscar nominee Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura.
Lavandera's Latin temperament, coupled with German perfection and deep knowledge of the twentieth century repertoire, guarantees an exceptional interpretation ahead of us. Truly, a concert no one in Minnesota should miss.
Doors open at 7:00 PM.
TICKETS ARE FULLY REFUNDABLE UP UNTIL 72 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT.
